(September 22, 2022) – The college golf season is underway and there are a number of Connecticut players and teams to follow throughout the season. College golf features a wrap around season with a portion of the schedule played in the fall before pausing and resuming in early 2023.
Players to Watch:
Connor Belcastro (Princeton, Jr.) – Last year the 2018 Connecticut Junior Amateur winner competed in a career high eight events for the Tigers.
Ben Carpenter (Yale, So.) – The 2022 Connecticut Amateur champion had an impressive first season for the Bulldogs winning medalist honors at the Ivy League Championships and earning First-Team All-Ivy.
Tommy Dallahan (UConn, Jr.) – Dallahan has been a consistent member of the Huskies line up since his freshman season. As a sophomore he captured medalist honors at the Bash at the Beach. During the CSGA season Dallahan tied for fourth at the Russell C. Palmer Cup.
Matt Doyle (Elon, So.) – As a freshman Doyle, the 2020 Connecticut Junior Amateur winner, was third on the team in scoring average and recorded six top-25 finishes to go along with one top-five showing.
Maisie Filler (Florida, Jr.) – As a sophomore Filler led the Gators in scoring average and was the team leader in top-10 (4) and top-25 (8) finishes, under-par rounds (14), under-par tournaments (6), and rounds in the 60s (8). Filler earned the match clinching point in the SEC semifinals sending Florida to the title match for the first time in program history. In the second tournament of her junior season Filler finished as the runner-up for the second time in her career.
Chris Fosdick (Virginia, Jr.) – The two-time Connecticut Amateur champion earned his first individual title last year at the Hamptons Intercollegiate to go along with two other top-10 finishes.
Jackson Fretty (Princeton, Jr.) – Last year Fretty competed in eight events and he finished in second place at the individual competition at The Prestige to begin the spring portion of the season. In June Fretty reached the Round of 16 at the Connecticut Amateur.
Liz Garfield (Holy Cross, Jr.) – Garfield was a steady presence in the Holy Cross line up last year. She is poised for a strong junior season.
Connor Goode (UConn, Fr.) – The 2021 Connecticut Junior Amateur winner made his Huskies debut at the beginning of the month competing as an individual.
Kate Hong (Holy Cross, Fr.) – During her junior career Hong was a member of the Connecticut Junior Girls’ team and this year she reached the finals of the Borck Junior. She also finished T8 at the Connecticut Women’s Amateur in July.
Ben James (Virginia, Fr.) – One of the top junior players in the country James began his college career in impressive fashion by winning his first event, the Streamsong Invitational.
Sarah Houle (William & Mary, Gr.) – Utilizing her extra year of eligibility due to Covid-19, Houle is continuing what has been a stellar collegiate career. A First-Team All-CAA performer last year, Houle won once while also recording three top-5 and five top-10 finishes. She began this year with a second place finish and a T5 showing.
Leslie Li (Hartford, So.) – This year’s CSGA P.J. Boatwright intern, Li will begin her sophomore season coming off a successful freshman year that saw her compete in eight events. Li has won the last two Connecticut Women’s Golf Association Championships.
Will Lodge (Yale, Fr.) – The 2022 Connecticut Junior Amateur and New England Junior Amateur winner began his career at Yale with a T3 finish in his first collegiate event, the Alex Lagowitz Memorial.
Meghan Mitchell (Appalachian State, Jr.) – After dealing with a back injury for a year Mitchell won her second Connecticut Women’s Amateur title in July.
Jackson Roman (Loyola University Maryland, So.) – Poised for a strong sophomore season Roman had an impressive summer that included a semifinal run at the Connecticut Amateur.
Jack Woods (Bryant, Jr.) – This year’s Connecticut Amateur medalist is coming off an impressive sophomore season for the Bulldogs that included a pair of top-15 finishes.
Teams to Watch:
UConn – Last year the Huskies nearly won a second consecutive Big East title. This year they return Vermont native Jared Nelson. The graduate student had an impressive summer reaching match play at the U.S. Amateur and winning the New England Amateur, Hornblower Memorial, and Vermont Amateur. UConn’s line up will also regularly feature Tommy Dallahan and Connor Goode.
Yale Men – The defending Ivy League champions boast two reigning CSGA champions on their roster in Ben Carpenter (Connecticut Amateur) and Will Lodge (Connecticut Junior Amateur).
Quinnipiac Women – The Bobcats have won the MAAC championship each of the last two years and have advanced to the NCAA Regionals.
Virginia – The Cavaliers feature have two of Connecticut’s best players – Ben James and Chris Fosdick. Both were in the line up when UVA won the Streamsong Invitational to open their season.
