(April 8, 2024) – The 2024 Connecticut State Golf Association season begins on Monday, April 15 at Stonington Country Club with the first event of the One Day Tournament Series sponsored by Chris Cote’s Golf Shop.
“It’s a great privilege to host the season-opener for the CSGA,” said Stonington CC head professional Justin Turner. “The beginning of the New England golf season brings a lot of excitement and anticipation amongst the players, and we’re thrilled to be the starting line for a season of competition and fun.”
Designed by Al Zikorus the first nine holes of the course were opened in August of 1992 with the final nine holes opened a little less than two years later in the spring of 1994.
The par-72 track will play at 6,550 yards for the Tettlebach Division and 6,154 yards for the Siderowf Division. Players will have a scoring opportunity early with a par-5 to start but if last year’s One Day Tournament is any indication – when only one player broke par – birdies will be few and far between.
Always a challenging course, Stonington CC features undulating greens and some wooded areas on the back nine that require shot shaping.
2024 One Day Tournament Series Schedule
“The key to having a good round here is keeping the ball in play off the tee, hitting the greens, or missing on the correct side,” explained Turner. “Then once you are on the putting surface green reading and speed control are crucial. It might sound cliche but if you hit a decent tee shot you will be in good shape because there isn’t much trouble between the fairway and green. It also helps to have a good game plan for a windy day. Any given day in April here can be good kite flying weather.”
Monday’s event is the start of a seven-month One Day Series Tournament schedule that weaves throughout the state of Connecticut and concludes on October 21 with the Al Acker One Day Championship at the Wethersfield Country Club.
Once again the One Day Series presented by Chris Cote’s Golf Shop will offer four divisions. Players 55 and under will compete in the Tettelbach Open Division and Tettlebach Net Division while players 55 and over will play in the Siderowf Gross Division and the Siderowf Net Division.
Last year Chris Cote’s Golf Shop Player of the Year honors were earned by Jamie Sheltman (Tettlebach Open Division), Rick Lawrence (Siderowf Gross Division), Walter Keuchkerian II (Tettlebach Net Division), and Scott Harger (Siderowf Net Division).
