After two beautiful weekend days, a field of 144 faced chilly, rainy conditions at Wethersfield Country Club on Monday morning, April 8 for the start of the 2019 season.
Two weeks earlier when online registration for the year’s first One Day tournament opened, it took just 7 minutes to fill the tee sheet, such was the demand to compete at Wethersfield in the first event of the Chris Cote One Day Series.
At 7:50 a.m. Jared Albert struck the first shot of the season, a driver that finished in the right rough on Wethersfield’s 330 yard, par 4 first hole. Albert’s second found a greenside bunker, but the Ellington Ridge golfer quickly recovered from the inauspicious start with up and down for par. First shot, first par, first “sandy” of the season.
Three and ½ hours later, Albert was “leader in the clubhouse” with 76, a score the four-handicapper felt “wasn’t too bad” but “won’t stand up for long.” He was right. Late in the day Steve Mikluski of Ellington Ridge finished with 72 (+1) to take Tettelbach honors. Albert and Farmington's Chris Maxwell tied second. Wallie Feliciano of Wallingford had 65 to win net. Mikulski was second with 70.
In the Siderowf (senior) Division Gary Mattesen of Cedar Knob shot three-over 74, to win by one over H. Smith Richardson's Mike Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick shared net honors with Luke Bedini at 71.
