Three from Connecticut qualify for U.S Senior Women’s Amateur

(Mercedese Large qualified for the US Senior Women's Amateur for the second year in a row)

September 14, 2018:  2017 Liz Janangelo Caron Women's Player of the Year, Jen Holland of Guilford, Mercedese “Ellie” Large of Bloomfield, and Debbie Johnson of Stamford all qualified for the 2018 U.S. Senior Women's Amateur championship on Wednesday at Silvermine Golf Club in Norwalk.  Holland and Johnson tied for medalist honors at 76, and Large grabbed the 5th and final qualifying spot at 79.

Conducted by the United States Golf Association, the Senior Women's Amateur Championship will be played at Orchid Island Golf and Beach Club in Vero Beach, Florida October 6-11.

It will be a return trip to this championship for all three Connecticut players as each also qualified for last year's Senior Women's Amateur at Waverly Country Club in Portland, Oregon. Holland advanced the furthest in reaching the second round of match play.

For Johnson, this will be her third time reaching the U.S. Senior Women's, and her 10th career USGA championship overall.

“I'm happy to have another chance to play in a USGA event,” said Johnson.  “Each one of them is special, and it never gets old playing in them.  And at this point, I've made quite a few friends who regularly qualify to play, so it'll be fun to catch up with them.  Along with getting a chance to challenge my game on a spectacular golf course, that's one of the things I look forward to each year.”
