Tallwood CC to Host 68th Senior Amateur

Tallwood Country Club will host its second Connecticut State Golf Association Championship this year when it hosts the state’s top senior competitors for the 68th Connecticut Senior Amateur Championship on September 23rd – 24th.

Located in Hebron, Connecticut, Tallwood Country Club was founded by Mike Ovian in 1970, who opened the first nine holes in 1971. With the help of friends and a dedicated Men’s Club, Ovian was able to open the second nine in 1974 and complete the championship layout. After twenty five years of operation, the Ovian family sold the property to the McDermott family in 1995. Since 1995, Tallwood has undergone numerous renovations, including lengthening the course into the championship venue it is today.

Recently, Tallwood Country Club hosted the 2004 Connecticut Mid-Amateur Championship, which featured Jim Gentile of Wampanoag Country Club capturing the second of his Mid-Amateur titles in a four-way playoff over David French (Tallwood CC), Steven Bugg (Clinton CC) and Tom Yellin (Stanwich Club).

Tallwood Country Club also received the Walter Lowell Award for distinguished service as a public golf course in 2004. Head Professional John Nowobilski has been at Tallwood since 1982, having received awards for Connecticut Section Professional of the Year in 1986 and Connecticut Teacher of the Year in 1997.
