Max Chubet claims Pahoulis Medal at Junior Amateur

Watertown (July 6, 2020) – With three birdies and just one bogey, Max Chubet of Chippanee Golf Club fired a 2-under par 69 at Watertown Golf Club on Monday to claim the Nick Pahoulis Medal and lead all qualifiers for match play in the 79th playing of the Connecticut Junior Amateur.

Chubet rode a hot putter to earn the number one seed as the field was reduced from 74 to 32 for the start of match play Tuesday morning. Michael Hanratty, of Farmington Woods Golf Club was one stroke back at 70, minus-1. Chubet and Hanratty were the only players to break par over the 6,423 yard Watertown layout. The cut for match play came with exactly 32 players at 78 or below.

Tied for third at 72 were Charles Smilovic of Greenwich Country Club, Matthew Doyle of Madison Country Club, and Jack Bosworth of Hop Meadow Country Club. Smilovic and Doyle were relatively steady, while Bosworth’s round was a rollercoaster with 7 pars, 6 bogeys and 5 birdies to produce the same total score.

The Junior Amateur continues Tuesday morning at 8:00am with the round of 32 in match play, followed by the round of 16 in the afternoon. Quarterfinal and semifinal matches are set for Wednesday, with an 18-hole final scheduled for Thursday morning.
