(October 21, 2022) – Stan McFarland has been named the president of the New England Golf Association. He will become the first president from Connecticut since John Walsh in 2016.

McFarland who played in the first ever NEGA event in the early 1960s and the first New England Senior Amateur in 1998 will serve as the president for the 2023 season.

“It is an honor to be named the president of the New England Golf Association but I am never sure I deserve any of these,” said McFarland the president of the Connecticut State Golf Association from 2015-2016. “At first I kind of resisted it because I have had a lot of good things happen. I just said it should go to someone else. But they insisted I should take the position because we want you there. That was really Harry McCracken who was the executive director at the time. It is an honor. There aren’t a lot of people that have been the president of the CSGA and NEGA.”

Past New England Golf Association Presidents

During his time as president of the CSGA, McFarland added a director of women’s golf and increased the number of volunteers. In addition to his work for the state, McFarland was chosen to serve on the USGA’s Public Links Championship Committee and has officiated at numerous national championships. When the Public Links was discontinued, McFarland joined the Senior Amateur Committee.

He also officiated the 2017 U.S. Four-Ball Championship at Pinehurst, and has served as a lead rules official at nearly a dozen NCAA Division II Women’s Championships.

McFarland, a longtime member of Manchester Country Club, was inducted into the Connecticut Golf Hall of Fame in 2019.
