“The membership gets behind the competitions,” said Director of Golf Glenn Carlson. “They really enjoy supporting and watching the tournaments, and we’ve had some great events over the years with exciting finishes.”

This year will mark the second time that Torrington CC has hosted the Connecticut Women’s Amateur after previously hosting the event in 2009 when Daniela Lendl won the title.

The par-72, 6,000-yard layout was designed by Orrin Smith and opened in 1929. Since opening, in addition to hosting the Connecticut Women’s Amateur, the course has hosted a number of CSGA events, including the Connecticut Open and Connecticut Amateur.

Orrin Smith, from New Britain, got his start in golf architecture as a construction superintendent to Willie Park, Jr. Later, he was a regular field supervisor for a number of Donald Ross projects.

“There are some places where players might take a risk and go at something,” explained Carlson of how players can attack the course. “I think there will be some exciting moments and some places on the course where some of the players can get a little aggressive.”

The quest for the 61st Connecticut Women’s Amateur and an automatic spot in the 126th U.S. Women’s Amateur set to be played next month at The Honors Course will begin on Monday, July 13 at 7:30 a.m. Play will continue on Tuesday with the second round before concluding on Wednesday with the final round.

The final round will include the top 24 players and ties after 36 holes.
