We Want You….to Volunteer with the CSGA!

Today ends National Volunteer Month, but it’s never the wrong time to volunteer with the CSGA.

We oversee or run directly some 70 events each year. Without volunteers, we couldn’t do it.

In 2018 some 150 volunteer of all kinds—rules officials, spotters, scorers, administrators—put in an incredible 6697 hours to support championships, One Day tournaments, high school competitions and USGA qualifiers.

“Volunteering gives me the opportunity to give back to the game by helping to conduct competitive events for individuals who possess the ability to play the game at a higher level than I have ever achieved,” says John Marion of Norwich, a former CSGA President and corporate executive, with a smile.

Our volunteers come from all walks of life. Last year’s Volunteer of the Year, Les Zimmerman of Meriden, who retired after 31 years of teaching in, says: “It’s a wonderful game, different from all the others. It’s good to contribute to something you feel passionate about.” Bill Cremins is a Superior Court judge in the Waterbury district, and an elite rules official.

Like a lot of volunteers, Jim Daly of Trumbull was recruited by another volunteer, longtime CSGA rules official Owen Evans. “I enjoy the camaraderie with other volunteers I’ve met,” says Daly, “being outdoors on different courses, and watching good golf. I’ve developed some nice friendships. And it’s very satisfying when players thank us for what we do, and that happens a lot.”

Volunteers like these allow us to spend less on administration and give more to the CSGA Foundation in support of programs such as the Widdy Neale Scholarship.

As John Marion suggests, you don’t have to be a great golfer to volunteer. But you’ll have a chance to see some terrific golf, make new friends and give back to the sport you love.

We are happy to have volunteers who can do several events or just a couple. Whatever help you can lend is valuable and appreciated.

“I love every one of our volunteers,” says Director of Competitions Ryan Hoffman. “Without them, we could not do what we do.”

We look forward to hearing from you!
