2022 CIAC State Championships Recap

(June 9, 2022) – The 2022 CIAC State Golf Championships were contested this week at multiple courses throughout the state.

Boys Division I

Fairfield Prep (+20) captured the team title at Stanley Golf Course by eight shots over second place Cheshire (+28) while Daniel Hand (+39) was third. Fairfield Prep was led to the title by medalist Michael Rothberg who fired the only under-par round of the day, a 2-under 69.
Rothberg played an impressive round carding four birdies and only two bogeys.

Guilford’s Andrew Beauton (+1) was second while Reece Scott of Daniel Hand, Charles Duffy of Fairfield Prep, and Scott Petrosky of Bristol Central tied for third at 2-over.

Boys Division II

In the Boys Division II State Championship at Tallwood Country Club RHAM (+23) captured the title by an impressive fourteen shots over second place Ellington (+37) with Killingly (+40) three shots further back in third place. RHAM had four players break 80 led by Conner Rabbitt’s 5-over 77.

Ellington’s Bradley Sawka ran away with the individual title thanks to an impressive 3-under 69 that put him seven shots clear of the field. Sawka, who recently played in the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball, struggled to a 2-over 37 on the front nine but caught fire on the back nine firing a 5-under 32 that included six birdies. Overall Sawka birdied seven times.

Mason LaCapra (+4) of Watertown was second one shot better than a group of four players in a tie for third at 5-over. The third place group was comprised of Carson Waddell (RHAM), Rabbitt (RHAM), James O’Connor (Ellington), and Cameron Seiffert (Killingly).

Boys Division III

The Boys Division III State Championship was contested at Fairview Farms Golf Course where Portland (+22) captured the title. St. Paul Catholic (+37) was second while East Catholic (+50) was third.

Portland was paced by co-medalist Luke Stennett who shot a 1-over 73 to share the honors with Coginchaug’s Colin Murphy. Stennett’s round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 18th hole to go along with two birdies and five bogeys. Murphy played his way into the winner’s circle with an eagle of his own on the par-5 third and two birdies against three bogeys and a double-bogey.

Quinn Lapinksi (+3) of Portland rounded out the top three of the individual standings.

Girls Division I

At Tashua Knolls Golf Course New Cannan (+36) ran away with the team title thanks in large part to the impressive play of medalist Molly Mitchell who signed for a 3-over 75. Mitchell rolled in birdied on Nos. 9 and 14 to solidify her spot atop the medalist leaderboard.

In the Team Championship Greenwich was second with Trumbull in third.

Aoife Devaney (+4) finished second in the individual race while Laniah Moffett (+5) was third.

Girls Division II

Playing at Timberlin Golf Course Berlin (+45) captured the Girls Division II state title. The Redcoats were paced by co-medalist and teammates Libby Dunn and Kenna Roman both of whom shot 8-over 80s. Dunn played a steady round highlighted by two birdies while Roman carded one birdie.

In the team competition St. Paul Catholic finished second with Masuk third. Jamie Andrade of St. Joseph and Berlin’s Samantha Dunn shared third at 12-over in the individual race.
