Great Barrington, Massachusetts (October 7, 2021) – For the first time since 2013 Team Connecticut captured the Women’s Tri-State Matches. Contested across three days at Wyantenuck Country Club Connecticut earned 155.5 points to edge out Massachusetts (148 points) and Rhode Island (128.5) to end the drought.
“We were all very excited to come out on top against what is always a very good Massachusetts team, said Connecticut Team Captain Joyce Curran. “And to win it in Massachusetts no less!”
The Tri-State Matches are the final leg of the three-day competition with players from Connecticut (CWGA), Massachusetts (MassGolf), and Rhode Island (RIGA). In these matches, eight players from each state compete in two simultaneous matches against competitors from the other two associations. One (1) point was awarded for every hole won, ½ point for every hole tied and zero (0) points for any hole lost.
After three days of play everything came down to the final match. With Massachusetts holding onto a slim lead Jill Tryon produced earning 23 of a possible 36 points to push Connecticut over the top. Jo Rasmussen led Connecticut with 26 points while Debbie Johnson turned in an impressive 20 points.
“Everybody who came out to play did a great job,” said Curran. “We had great team spirit, we love each other, and to come out with a win after that is nice. Massachusetts, it’s difficult to beat those guys, so it feels pretty good [to win].”
Throughout the tournament Connecticut had to handle some adversity dealing with a weather-shortened first day, fog delays, and a constant barrage of gnats. Through it all Connecticut was able to rise above and accrue enough points to regain the title.
The remainder of the Connecticut roster included Endicott Cup co-champion Mercedese Large, Myra Macmillian, Julie Paolino, Kris Keegan, and Lynn Scully.
