Connecticut Women’s Amateur heads to Race Brook CC in 2021

Race Brook Country Club in Orange will welcome the 56th Connecticut Women's Amateur on July 20-21. In 2020 Sophia Sarrazin won at Fairview Farm Golf Course firing the lone subpar round of the tournament in the final round to win by four shots over Jen Holland.

“Race Brook is a natural fit for the Connecticut Women's Amateur,” says Marsha Rupp, CSGA Director of Women's Golf & Client Service. “With its focus on developing girls golf under LPGA Teaching and Club Professional, Jennifer Barnsley. The Connecticut Women's Amateur boasts four divisions, from Juniors to Super Seniors, and showcases a multi-generational field of teenagers to veteran senior players competing for those titles and the overall Championship.”

Founded in 1912 and opened in 1913, Race Brook was designed by Robert D. Pryde and is celebrated as one of the oldest private clubs in the state. In 2012 Race Brook celebrated its 100th Anniversary and as part of the club's celebration hosted its fifth Connecticut Amateur. Race Brook has also hosted the Connecticut Open, New England Amateur, New England Senior Amateur, and the Connecticut PGA Championship.

Race Brook holds a prominent place in the state's women's golf history. Pat O'Sullivan joined the club in 1942 as a junior member and used Race Brook as a springboard to a decorated amateur career. In 1947 O'Sullivan won the first of her 10 Connecticut Women's Golf Association Match Play titles, she captured the first three Connecticut Women's Amateur championships from 1966-1968, won three New England Championships, and represented the United States on the 1952 Curtis Cup team.

A par 71 layout, Race Brook can be stretched out to 6,502 yards. Players begin their round with one of the more difficult holes on the course, a long downhill par-4 that requires players to hit the left side of the fairway. Despite the challenging opening hole players will have a chance to score early with two par-5's coming early in the round on the 3rd and 5th holes. On the back, nine players will need to get their scoring done on the first few holes of the side before holding on down the stretch.
