Wethersfield (July 14, 2020) A field of 72 players competed at Wethersfield Country Club in the 1st Parent Child Championship. Born from the Father & Son Net Tournament, the new event welcomed women into the field for the first time in CSGA history.
The field was split into two flights, Mixed and Mens with gross and net prizes, and was played using the Chapman format. In the Chapman format, both players on a team tee off, then play each other’s ball for the second shot. One of the second shots is then selected to continue play and the ball is played alternatively until holed. On par-3’s, the players must select the ball to be played following their first shot and play alternately until the ball is holed.
In the Mixed field, it was the father-daughter team of NoraNoel and Gerard Nolan taking the title with a round of 4-over 75.
“It was fun, it was a real experience to be part of the first-ever Parent Child,” said NoraNoel Nolan who will play this fall for the University of Lynchburg. “We love playing together, it was a real bonding experience.”
The duo played a steady round carding 14 pars and just four bogeys. “Anytime you can tee it up in Connecticut, especially with my daughter it is a treat. I really enjoyed it,” said Gerard Nolan.
Second place in the Mixed field was shared by the teams of Chip Kohn and Meredith Norton; Greg and Bethany Fell at 11-over.
“I’m used to my dad playing so much better than me,” Bethany said with a smile at her dad Greg. “But today I played considerably better than him so I got to be the ringer for the team and hit some good shots.”
In the Mens Flight the father-son tandems comprised of Les and Brett Zimmerman; Kurt and Peter Myers tied with rounds of even-par 71, with the Zimmermans capturing the title via a scorecard tiebreaker.
“We have played a lot in the Father Son but this format is a lot more fun to play with alternating tee shots, two balls in play and this is my favorite golf course,” Les said following the round. The Zimmermans combined for two birdies, two bogeys, and the rest pars.
Kurt and Peter Myers got off to a quick start firing a 1-under 34 on the front nine with two birdies before giving some back on the second nine finishing with a 1-over 37.
Despite the narrow defeat, Pete Myers, who only started playing golf two-years ago was all smiles following the round, “It is fantastic, I take full advantage of [getting to play with my dad].”
Pete, the closer for the University of Hartford baseball team continued, “For myself, baseball was canceled this year so I decided to [play more] golf. I joined Hop Meadow Country Club this year and I want to play golf with my dad before you can’t play golf with your dad.”
Sharing third place were Rich and 11-year-old William Lord; Brian McHugh and Finn McHugh at 1-over 72.
“It was great [to play with my dad],” said Finn McHugh. “We had a lot of fun, got to give him a little chirp.”
“It’s good, it keeps you focused,” Brian McHugh responded with a laugh.” I think it is a lot of good camaraderie and you have some fun with it too.”
Lord, the youngest player in the field at 11-years-old is currently a 5-handicap, plays on the Hurricane Tour, US Kids, and in the PGA Jr. League.
The Mixed Net Division was captured by the grandmother-grandson combination of Toby and 14-year-old Matt Schuman with a tally of 1-over 72. The Schumans rolled in five net birdies on the day including three in a five-hole stretch late on the front nine.
In the Men’s Net Division Nick and Alexander Kapinos fired a splendid 6-under 65 to finish atop the leaderboard. The Kapinos round was highlighted by nine net birdies. The Lords tied for second with Dave and David Mastracchio at 5-under while Paul and Michael Nowosadko, along with the Myers shared fourth at 4-under.
