Bristol, Connecticut (October 24, 2022) – Pomperaug overcame poor weather and a 40-minute rain delay to win the 2022 CIAC Fall Division II championship at Chippanee Golf Club.
“We don’t cancel practice for this kind of weather,” Pomperaug head coach Rich Szymanski told Joe Morelli of GametimeCT. “Guys are used to this kind of weather. They don’t enjoy it, but we make a habit of practicing in it.”
Pomperaug (+39) was led to their four state title and first since 2013 by seniors Daniel Casanta and Luke Brower, both of whom fired 5-over 75s to tie for second place.
“Senior year, going out with a bang, it’s really awesome,” said Daniel Casanta who reached match play at both the Connecticut Amateur and Connecticut Junior Amateur.
Two-time defending champion St. Joseph (+45) finished second while Berlin, Bethel, and Lewis Mills all tied for third at 49-over.
In the medalist race, Northwest Catholic’s Cole Banning turned in a 1-under 69 to win by a commanding six shots.
“I got my game together a month ago,” said Cole Banning the winner of last week’s CCC championship.
Banning started his round with a birdie and never looked back. He played the front nine in an impressive 2-under 33 on his way to a four birdie, three bogey round.
