Danbury, Connecticut (August 12, 2024) – Three-time defending Connecticut Mid-Amateur winner Rick Dowling and Andrew Watson shared medalist honors at 43rd U.S. Mid-Amateur Qualifying hosted by Ridgewood Country Club.
1 over after 10 holes Dowling caught fire on the back nine playing the final eight holes in 3 under. He jump-started his back nine with birdies on Nos. 11 and 12 before adding his third birdie of the side on the par-5 15th. Dowling, a finalist at the 2022 Connecticut Amateur hosted by Ridgewood CC, did slip up with a bogey on the challenging par-3 17th before rebounding with a birdie on the closing par-5 to sign for a 2 under 69.
Andrew Watson matched Dowling thanks to a late birdie flurry. Even par after 14 holes Watson birdied the two par-5s down the stretch, Nos. 15 and 18, to earn his spot in the field of the 43rd U.S. Mid-Amateur.
The final two spots were determined in a 3-for-2 playoff. Thomas McCarthy, Justin Beal, and Martin Fournier-Giguere all finished at even-par 71 with McCarthy and Beal advancing.
Two alternate spots were also up for grabs with Fournier-Giguere earning the first spot and James Smith (+1) taking the second alternate slot.
The 2024 U.S. Mid-Amateur will be played from September 21-26 at Kinloch Golf Club in Manakin-Sabot, Virginia.
