Clinton, Connecticut (May 10, 2021) – On an overcast, wet and chilly day at Clinton Country Club the duo of Les and Brett Zimmerman defended their title and won the 2nd Parent Child Championship. The Zimmermans battled their way to a 1-over 73 that was good enough for a three-stroke victory.
Beginning on the 5th hole, playing under the Chapman format, the Zimmermans started their day with a disappointing three-putt bogey before settling into a round that included three birdies and four bogeys.
In the Chapman format, both players on a team tee off, then play each other’s ball for the second shot. One of the second shots is then selected to continue play and the ball is played alternatively until holed. On par-3’s, the players must select the ball to be played following their first shot and play alternately until the ball is holed.
Following four consecutive pars the Zimmermans carded their first birdie on the par-4 10th when Les rolled in a 15-footer to jump start a three birdie in seven hole stretch. The second birdie fell on the par-4 12th and despite a bogey on the par-5 14th they were able to rebound with a birdie on No. 16 to move to 1-under for the round. “We sort of zigged and zagged all day long,” Les said. ”On a lot of holes we had one shot where we needed a player to hit the shot and they did.”
The round could have slipped away from the Zimmermans early had it not been for steady putting on the 6th and 7th holes. Following the opening bogey on No. 5, the duo needed to convert a difficult two-putt par on the par-3 6th, and then after Brett came up 15-feet short with a birdie try on the par-4 7th Les was able to roll in the par saving putt.
“We have played together a lot during our lifetime in our men’s club and our city championships and so forth,” Les said. “We have been runner-up’s three-times in the Father Son so we enjoy playing together for sure.”
The team of Eric and Eric Ashworth shared second along with Jeff and Jack Wise at 4-over 76 while Mack and Arthur Fuller took fourth at 5-over 77 and in fifth it was the duo of Chris and Bryce Cote at 6-over 78.
In the Net Division Thomas and Jack Tulfer emerged victorious with a 4-under 68 tally. Two teams finished 3-under in second place – Sal Sabia and Sal Sabia Jr.; Daniel and Mark Barzottini, one shot further back at 2-under in a tie for fourth were the teams of Eric and Eric Ashworth; Hudson and Daniel Hagmann.
