Abby Freda, a Widdy Neale Scholarship recipient, knows she has been fortunate. She says one of the luckiest things to happen to her was when she was 16-years-old and a friend told her they were hiring at Wampanoag Country Club. She went straight over and was hired on the spot as a hostess in the dining room. In May of 2021, Abby was promoted to waitress and she knew this was her big chance.
Abby is currently a freshman at Fordham University and she could not be happier. She loves that the school is so close to New York City but also the fact that when you are on campus, it is a beautiful, quiet oasis. Fordham has also been a great fit for her academically and she is very excited about the Jesuit approach to education which focuses on intellectual competence and the commitment to pursuing justice. The university also provides wonderful volunteer opportunities which is something Abby has always enjoyed.
As we all know, college today is in Abby’s words is, “wildly expensive. My family and I knew about the tuition and housing but it is all the other stuff, like books, that can add up quickly.” That is why Abby is so thankful to the members at Wampanoag CC for their support and for the assistance provided by the Widdy Neale Scholarship Fund!
