Newington, Connecticut (June 17, 2024) – With a late surge Brian Hedstrom has medaled at the 18th Senior Match Play Championship hosted by Indian Hill Country Club.
With the wind howling on a brilliantly sunny day Hedstrom saved his best golf for last. Playing on his home course, Hedstrom was 1 over through 13 holes before converting three birdies on the final five holes. His birdies came on Nos. 14, 15, and 18.
“I made it a point not to look at any scores today since I had an afternoon tee time and just play the course,” said Brian Hedstrom a two-time Connecticut Amateur champion. “The conditions were tough this afternoon and I just took what the course gave me. It took a lot of patience to not take on some of the pins today since I’ve played so many rounds here.”
Up next for Hedstrom will be the top seed and the Round of 32. Of the upcoming match play set to begin on Tuesday morning Hedstrom said, “I’m just going to play my own game and see where that stacks up.”
The top five was rounded out by Richard Stevens (EClub of Connecticut) and Ken Parisi (Indian Hill CC) in a tie for second at even par while six players shared fourth place with a 1 over tally. The group included defending champion Glen Boggini (Ellington Ridge CC), Michael Hooper (Brooklawn CC), Bob Murphy (Brownson CC), Patrick McGuiness (Keney GC), Robert Bartha (Tallwood CC), and Frank Mollica (EClub of Connecticut).
A 13-for-3 playoff at 5 over rounded out the bracket with Jim Ezold (EClub of Connecticut), David Marshall (Quinnatissett CC), and Stephen Victory (Rockledge CC) advancing.
The 18th Senior Match Play Championship will continue on Tuesday with the Round of 32 and Round of 16 followed by the quarterfinals and semifinals on Wednesday. The 18-hole championship match will be contested on Thursday morning.
