Worcester, Massachusetts (October 16, 2024) – After two bitterly cold and windy days at Worcester Country Club Team Connecticut came up just short in its bid to rally on the final day of the 90th Tri-State Matches.
On day one Massachusetts tallied 22.5 points between the Four-Ball and foursome sessions to take a comfortable lead over both Rhode Island (13 points) and Connecticut (12.5 points). However, with 96 points up for grabs in the final day singles the end result was still in doubt.
Playing in threesomes and competing in simultaneous Nassau matches with one point available for winning each the front nine, back nine, and overall match Team Connecticut put together a vicious rally.
After beginning the day 10 points behind, Connecticut came roaring out of the gates winning 10 of 15 matches against Massachusetts to get as close as four points. In fact, Connecticut (75 points) outscored Massachusetts 29-19 and Rhode Island 34-14 but in the end the mountain proved to be too high to climb as Massachusetts (80.5 points) held on for the victory.
“We dug a hole for ourselves after the first round of Four-Ball but the players never gave up and almost pulled it off with outstanding play in the singles matches,” eighth-year team captain Roger Everin said.
Team Connecticut was led by Ben Conroy (9.5 points), Ashton Lewis (9 points), Anthony Guerrera (7.5 points), Adam Friedman (7 points), Rick Dowling (7 points), Peter Tomlinson (7 points), Brian Hedstrom (7 points), Jamie Sheltman (6.5 points), Dave Jones (6 points), and Tim Murphy (5.5 points).
“Although we came up a little short,” Everin said. “I’m so proud of each of them and how they never gave up and continued to support each other. The main takeaway is all the great memories that each of them will have from getting to represent the CSGA and Connecticut.”
