Bogey-Free Khang leading 2012 Women

Massachusetts’s top junior girls golfer, Megan Khang of Rockland traveled south to Clinton, Connecticut on Tuesday and grabbed hold of the first round lead in the 14th Connecticut Women’s Open Championship.  Khang fired a bogey-free 2-under par 70 with 16 pars and 2 birdies over the 5,873 yard par 72 Clinton Country Club course.

“It was a good day,” said the 14 year-old Khang, “I could have had a few more putts drop, but no complaints, it was a good round.”

Khang leads a field of sixty-one professionals and amateurs that includes former winners Jordan Lintz (2011), C.J. Reeves (2009), Lynn Valentine (2008) and Sue Ginter (2007).  The professionals are competing for a first place prize of $5,000.  The winner will also have their name engraved on the permanent Valerie Bulkeley Trophy.

In second place, two shots behind Khang is another Massachusetts player, Laura Tereby of Allston.  Starting 2-over par after four holes, Tereby was flawless for her final fourteen holes recording two birdies and twelve pars.

Among Connecticut’s entrants, East Lyme’s Lynn Valentine and Goshen’s Isabelle Lendl both shot 73 to finish the first round tied for 3rd overall.  Final round play in the 36-hole championship begins at 8:00am on Wednesday with the leaders teeing off at 11:20.
