Glen Boggini of Twin Hills Country Club has a one-shot lead after the first round of the 25th Connecticut Mid-Amateur Championship, as Hop Meadow Country Club in Simsbury proved to be a challenging test on Monday. Only two players among the field of 122 managed to break par on the 6,915 yard, par-72 course, with Boggini’s 70 leading the way. He recorded five birdies, three bogeys and ten pars to complete his round at 2-under par.
At 1-under par 71, Brian Ahern of Wampanoag stands alone in second place as the only other player to break par. Three players, Steve Wagner (CC of Farmington), Ronald Soccoli, Jr. (Black Hall Club), and former winner Dave Szewczul (Tunxis Plantation CC) recorded even par rounds of 72. Defending champion, Raymond Floyd, Jr. is five strokes back after shooting 75. .
The CSGA Mid-Amateur brings together the top amateur golfers in the state who are at least 25 years old and hold a handicap index not exceeding 6.4. After Monday’s round the field was reduced to the low 39 and ties. The cut came at 77 and yielded a total of 50 golfers who will play 36 holes on Tuesday to complete the 54-hole championship. Play begins at 8:00am with the final round set to begin at 1:00pm. There is no charge for admission, and spectators are welcome.
