CSGA Finishes T-27 in USGA State Team Championship

Galloway, N.J., Sept 21, 2012

With a final round score of 159, and a 459 total, the Connecticut team of Brian Ahern, Matt Smith and Jeff Hatten finished the 2012 USGA State Team Championship in a tie for 27th place among 52 teams. All 50 states plus Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia entered teams of three players in the tenth playing of the championship.

“Matt, Jeff, and Brian were all outstanding representatives of the CSGA and the State of Connecticut this week,” said CSGA Executive Director, Mike Moraghan. “It’s very satisfying to have men like these on our state team. Even when they weren’t playing their best golf, they conducted themselves in an exemplary manner. And it was impressive to see them grinding on every shot for all 54 holes.“

“Two years ago I set a personal goal of making this team,” said Ahern, a former CSGA State Amateur champion and two-time winner of the CSGA Mid-Amateur, “I know all of us were disappointed that we didn’t play better this week, but it was a real honor to be part of this team, and a great experience to play in this tournament.”

New York won the championship by six shots over Iowa.  The Empire State team of Michael Miller, Max Buckley and Joseph Saladino recorded a team score of 2–over par 428 on the 6,956 yard, par 71 Galloway National Golf Club in Galloway, New Jersey.  With rounds of 72-69-68, Miller’s performance was the most outstanding of any player the field.
