Two-time champion, Megan Khang of Rockland, Massachusetts came out on top today, shooting seven under-par 65 to steal the lead heading into the final round of the 17th Connecticut Women’s Open Championship.
Conducted by the Connecticut State Golf Association, the Connecticut Women’s Open Championship is a 36-hole stroke play competition being played at The Golf Club of Avon in Avon, Connecticut on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 18th and 19th. The tournament is open to any amateur or professional female golfer, regardless of residency, and annually attracts some of the top competitors from across the country.
Her first return since her back-to-back Women’s Open titles in 2012 and 2013 and current leader, Khang played strong throughout the entire first day at the Golf Club at Avon. After recording eight birdies and only one bogey on her round, Khang is in great standing going into the second day of the Connecticut Women’s Open.
“I had one bogey today but that was just a dumb error on my part,” said Khang. “I just three-putted the second hole but from then on it was just kind of alright, ‘if you’re far away from the hole, just lag it up and if it goes in, it goes in. But I think that a lot of my birdie putts came from the par fives. I gave myself a lot of chances out there and I relatively hit them close so I didn’t have to worry about those long, birdie putts and stressing out about having to two-putt for par.”
Khang is making her return to the Women's Open carrying plenty of momentum from an already stellar summer of tournament golf. Currently the third ranked junior in the country according to Golfweek, Khang recently qualified for her third U.S. Women’s Open title earlier this year. She went on to shoot rounds of 71-70-73-71—285 to finish in a tie for 35th place, good enough for low amateur honors. She also won the Women's Eastern Amateur, shooting rounds of 67-70-72 for a wire-to-wire victory.
Three strokes stand between Khang and professional Anna Ausanio of Hopewell Junction, New York, who sits alone in second place. Ausanio shot four under-par 68 through today and is quickly narrowing the gap between herself and Khang. With a total of five birdies and only one bogey, Ausanio played solid throughout her entire opening round.
Tied for third, Ashlan Ramsey of Greenville, South Carolina and Lindsay McGetrick of White Plains, New York aren’t far behind Ausanio. Both tied at one under-par 71, they are just three strokes short of second place and six behind the leader.
Recently turned professional, Ramsey was hot on the ball throughout the day. Ramsey went onto say, “I played pretty well on the front side and shot two-under and then the backside was a little bit of a struggle. I wasn’t hitting it great today but still managed to make some putts and keep it under par so that’s good.”
With one round to play in the 36-hole championship, both professionals and amateurs are decorating the leader board. Megan Khang of Rockland, Massachusetts is the low amateur of the day and also holds the lead at 65. Professional, Anna Ausanio from Hopewell Junction, New York is in second place at 68.
Play in the final round of the 36-hole championship begins at 7:30am Wednesday off the first tee, and concludes with the final pairing of Khang, Ausanio, and Ramsey on the first tee at 11:00 a.m. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.
