Owens, Cufone Victorious at 13th One Day Championship

Results: Gross Divisions | Net Divisions

The CSGA wrapped up its 2014 season today with its One Day Championship at Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton. The 6,562 yard, par 71 Donald Ross layout is the annual home of the Championship and a favorite spot on the One Day schedule. Players earn the right to compete in the final event by attaining a top-5 finish in any of the CSGA’s twelve One Day tournaments throughout the season.

In the Tettelbach (under-55) Division, Addison Owens of the Washington Club recovered from a rocky start to claim medalist honors. Owens racked up six birdies on the back nine for a score of 41-30-71 and a one shot victory over Richard Malafronte of Hunter Golf Club. By match of cards Scott Emigh of Fenwick Golf Club won the Net Division of the Tettelbach with 84-15-69 over Martin Santacroce of Alling Memorial Golf Club. Santacroce shot 74-5-69.

In the Siderowf (55 and older) Division, Gene Cufone of Alling Memorial fired a two-under par 69 in a round that included four birdies and two bogeys. At 71, two strokes behind Cafone and tied for runner-up honors were Bill Torza of Wethersfield Country Club and Reverend William Lee of the Golf Course at Yale. For Rev. Lee, a 71 year-old three-time Connecticut Amateur champion, the round marked yet another occasion where the Connecticut Golf Hall of Fame inductee shot his age.

In the Net Division of the Siderowf, Joe Dancsak, Sr. of Quarry Ridge Golf Course led the way at 83-22-61, two better than James Ryder, Jr. of Great Neck Country Club who fired 75-12-63.

The Connecticut State Golf Association thanks all of the golf clubs who hosted tournaments this season, and the golfers and volunteers who helped make 2014 a record breaking year for participation in the CSGA One Day Series Sponsored by Chris Cote’s Golf Shop. The 2015 schedule begins next April at the historic Wethersfield Country Club.
