Westport, Connecticut (August 4, 2025) – On a gorgeous day at Longshore Golf Course, Ray Underwood (Washington Club) began his round at the 29th Super Senior Championship with a smooth front nine, making par after par and just one bogey to enter the back nine 1-over. However, Underwood’s game was stepped up on the back nine thanks to a show stopping five birdies on the back – most notably his birdie on the 17th.
Beginning with a 3-wood on the 351-yard par-4 17th, Underwood found the rough off the tee and then hit his second shot over the green. Sitting at 1-under and, “realizing that I was tied for the lead I knew I needed to birdie No. 17 and not leave it up to the very tough 18th,” Underwood said.
With a lie in the rough that made him contemplate chipping, Underwood grabbed the putter and the 40 foot down hill lie was read perfectly, dropping the putt right into the center of the cup for a one shot lead with one hole remaining.
One hole later Underwood finished his round off strong with one more birdie thanks to a beautiful shot with his 5 hybrid that landed about four feet from the pin. With the closing birdie Underwood capped off his 3-under 66 two shot victory.
“As with most competitors, I can say that when I’m actually in the hunt for something like this CSGA championship win or lose, I feel like I’m alive. To be in that position is great and from a sporting perspective, it’s truly invigorating to be in that position and be successful,” Underwood adds.
Frank Geiger (H. Smith Richardson GC) and Mark Durand (Indian Hill CC) tied in second place finishing at 1-under while Bob Murphy (Brownson CC) tied four fourth place with Drew Greenland (Rockrimmon CC) at even-par.
