Dr. Bob Ruby, Jr. of Madison C.C. has been named the new Team Captain for the Connecticut State Golf Association. Ruby takes over for his long time friend and regular playing partner, Bill Dober, who recently completed his two-year appointment.
“I couldn’t be happier than to turn the reins over to Bob,” said Dober. “He is a consummate gentleman who has a deep understanding of the game on a variety of levels. The Competitions Committee made an excellent choice, and I know Bob is going to be a great Team Captain.”
Known as an expert on the Rules of Golf, Dr. Ruby has worked as a Rules Official at twenty USGA Championships. He has accomplished the extremely rare feat of scoring 100 on the USGA Rules Test. A score of 75 is considered highly accomplished, and is the level at which CSGA Rules Officials become certified. A perfect score of 100 is practically unheard of throughout the United States and beyond.
Dr. Ruby’s competitive record spans nearly five decades, and includes a runner-up finish in the 1965 CSGA Junior, and a semifinalist finish in the 2001 CSGA State Amateur Championship. Ruby has won multiple One-Day and Pro-Am tournaments in Connecticut, and together with Dober, finished runner-up in the 2006 Anderson Memorial Senior Four Ball at Winged Foot G.C. In 2012, Ruby achieved the remarkable feat of winning the CSGA Father-Son Championship with his son, Brendan Ruby after having won the championship with his father, Bob Ruby, Sr. thirty-six years earlier in 1976.
“Dr. Bob Ruby is one of the most highly respected golf minds in Connecticut,” said CSGA Executive Director Mike Moraghan. “He also has the type of demeanor that every serious golfer can appreciate. He has a calmness about him that overlays a real competitive fire and passion for the game.”
“Competitive golf in Connecticut and the CSGA have always been a part of my life and the life of my family, and I am excited and honored to be selected Team Captain,” said Ruby.
As Captain, Ruby will begin his two-year term by leading the CSGA’s team of amateurs against the Connecticut Section PGA professionals in the annual Challenge Cup at New Haven Country Club in May. Captain Ruby will also lead the CSGA side in the Tri-State Matches against Massachusetts and Rhode Island in October.
