Watertown, Connecticut (June 23, 2025) – In their first appearance David and Leo Lane fought through the heat to capture the 6th Parent Child Championship hosted by Crestbrook Park Golf Course. The Lanes fired a 3-under 68 to finish three shots clear of defending champions Eric and EJ Ashworth (E).
The father-son duo stayed consistent from start to finish, taking full advantage of each other’s strengths. According to Leo, this was most evident on the three par-5s, which they played in 2-under. “We reached a bunch of them in two and had good two putts for birdie.”
Playing the Chapman format, the Lanes (Birchwood CC) began the shotgun start tournament on No. 13, and the tandem immediately demonstrated their teamwork with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 17 and 18.
“We drove the green on 17, and then hit it close on 18 for a kick-in, so back-to-back birdies after a bogey on No. 16,” said Leo. “And we just kind of kept the momentum, played smart, and made putts.”
Their stretch continued through the first half of their round with three pars. With both players complementing each other’s games, Leo’s consistency off the tee allowed David to attack pins with wedges as they continued to keep their round on track.
“Leo is very consistent, so if Leo got his ball in play, then I knew I was always going to have a second shot because he’s really good off the tee. And then I’m pretty good with the wedges, so Leo had some good opportunities, but the greens were very difficult, very undulating and on the slower side.”
The Lanes got as low as 4-under after a two-putt birdie on the par-5 ninth before slipping up briefly on the par-4 10th.
On the 10th, both players drove it into the trees, resulting in just their second bogey of the day. “After the bogey on No. 10 we just had to regroup and we did,” David said.
And rebound they did as the Lanes ended their day on a positive note with two pars to close out their 3-under-par round.
After coming out on top, there were nothing but good memories for the Lanes, according to David. “We kept our cool. We had fun. A lot of smiles. We didn’t get upset at all, that’s an accomplishment in itself.”
With this being their debut in the Parent Child Championship, the victory was even more meaningful.
“We’re going to keep coming for years to come,” David adds, explaining the impact golf has had on them both. “We just both love golf. We’re always kind of just sharing ideas and helping one another on our games.”
The top five was rounded out by Les/Brett Zimmerman in a tie for third place at 1-over with Frank/Mike Carey. Meanwhile, Joseph/Michael Gianatti shared fifth place with Kurt/Pete Meyers at 4-over.
In the Net Division, Alphonse/Myles Altorelli took the top spot at 4-under followed by Frank/Mike Carey and Michael/Mickey Nelson in a tie for third at 3-under. Sharing the fifth spot with a 2-under tally were Joseph/Michael Gianatti and Eric/EJ Ashworth.
