(January 12, 2023) – Bill Hermanson has been among the best players in the state of Connecticut for decades. In 1991 Hermanson was the Dick Tettelbach Player of the Year. In 2015 he won the Dick Siderowf Senior Player of the Year. And now he has won the Super Senior Player of the Year award.
“I guess [winning the Super Senior Player of the Year award] means I am getting old. I just became a grandfather so to win the Super Senior Player of the Year award and become a grandfather in the same week kind of is a reality check for me that I’m not getting any younger,” the 66-year-old Bill Hermanson said. “I have won all three players of the year awards so that is pretty cool.”
2022 Super Senior Player of the Year Standings
Once again in 2022, Hermanson proved that he is a threat any time he tees it up regardless of who he plays against. In June he reached match play at the Connecticut Amateur, a tournament he won in 1991, he also made the cut at both the Russell C. Palmer Cup and the Connecticut Mid-Amateur, an event he has won five times.
“Longevity is important in this game,” Hermanson said. “The game itself allows you to play for a long time, unlike some other sports. The beauty of our game is that you can play well into your later years but it doesn’t mean it is easy to stay competitive. I would say it gets harder every year for me to stay competitive. Not only with the super seniors or the seniors but sometimes I am competitive with the young guys as well. Under the right circumstances, I feel like I can still play with the young guys.”
Competing against the young guys translated into victories and a series of near misses against his contemporaries. Hermanson began his season by sharing the title in the Siderowf Division at the Stonington Country Club One Day, the first of his three One Day victories, highlighted by his win at the Al Acker One Day Championship. In senior circuit majors Hermanson nearly won the Connecticut Senior Amateur finishing tied for second while at the Match Play Championship he reached the Round of 32.
Speaking on his play throughout last season the 2012 Connecticut Golf Hall of Fame inductee said, “I played pretty consistent for most of the year as opposed to anything great in any one event. I think I just played pretty solid in a lot of events for most of the year.”
An understated summary of another fantastic season by one of the best to ever walk the fairways in the state of Connecticut.
“I just like to compete. I enjoy the camaraderie, I enjoy the friendships that I have been able to make over the years” explained Hermanson. “You feel like you get to know these guys at a pretty high level, especially the senior guys. It is just fun. It gets you up in the morning, it makes you practice, and I love the adrenaline rush when you are in contention. That is what we play for.”
