2023 CSGA Season Opens at Stonington Country Club

Two-time Tettlebach Open Division Player of the Year Chris Maxwell hits a shot at Stonington CC.

(April 6, 2023) – The 2023 Connecticut State Golf Association season begins on Monday at Stonington Country Club with the first event of the One Day Tournament Series presented by Chris Cote’s Golf Shop.

“Having the CSGA here at Stonington CC is a great way to showcase our club,” said head professional Justin Turner. “But more importantly it’s a way for us to support an association that does so much for the game of golf. Competition is the spirit of golf, but at the heart of the game is camaraderie, charitable support, and growth of the game. The CSGA promotes all of this and much more, and it’s a privilege to host an association that gives back so much.”

Tee Times

Designed by Al Zikorus the first nine holes of the course were opened in August of 1992 with the final nine holes opened a little less than two years later in the spring of 1994.

The par-72 track will play at 6,550 yards for the Tettlebach Division and 6,154 yards for the Siderowf Division. Players will have a scoring opportunity early with a par-5 to start but if last year’s One Day Tournament is any indication – when only one player broke par – birdies will be few and far between.

Always a challenging course, Stonington CC features undulating greens and some wooded areas on the back nine that require shot shaping.

“The course offers some challenging hole lengths, tee shots and approaches, but there aren’t many hidden hazards or forced carries,” Turner stated. “The two nines are different as well; the front nine is more open and flat but can play longer on a windy day, whereas the back nine has more tree-lined fairways and elevation, but those same trees can protect you when the winds are gusting.”

Monday’s event is the start of a seven-month One Day Series Tournament schedule that weaves throughout the state of Connecticut and concludes on October 10 with the Al Acker One Day Championship at the Lake of Isles.

2023 One Day Tournament Series Schedule

“Building on the momentum from 2022 with over 2,000 rounds played, our 2023 One Day Tournament Series is shaping up to be our most successful season yet,” said Director of Women’s Golf, Competitions and Development Marsha Rupp. “With Chris Cote’s Golf Shop continued commitment as our One Day Tournament Series sponsor and our incredible host clubs providing one-of-a-kind experiences for our players, we are delighted to offer 20 One Day tournaments. The diverse schedule includes 14  regular One Day events and six exclusive competitions: Two Women’s One Day events, two Tettelbach (Under 55), and two Siderowf (Over 55) tournaments.”

Once again the One Day Series presented by Chris Cote’s Golf Shop will offer four divisions. Players 55 and under will compete in the Tettelbach Open Division and Tettlebach Net Division while players 55 and over will play in the Siderowf Gross Division and the Siderowf Net Division.

Last year Chris Cote’s Golf Shop Player of the Year honors were earned by Chris Maxwell (Tettlebach Open Division), Dave Jones (Siderowf Gross Division), Glenn Pelt, Jr. (Tettlebach Net Division), and Nick Snyder (Siderowf Net Division).
