Cathy Boatwright of Brooklawn Country, a longtime USGA and CSGA volunteer who co-chaired the 2003 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship at the club, has been awarded the 2019 Isaac “Ike” Grainger Award for 25 years of service to the USGA and to the game.
A decades-long member of the Girls’ Junior Committee and a rules official at dozens of USGA and CSGA Championships, Boatwright was also part of the team that brought Brooklawn the 2020 U.S. Senior Women’s Open.
“This is wonderful and well-deserved recognitionfor Cathy,” said CSGA Executive Director Mike Moraghan. “The Ike Grainger Award is reserved for the best of the best, and Cathy is certainly in that group. In many ways, she is the perfect volunteer and perfect golf official. Smart, knowledgeable, even-tempered and possessing a real passion for the game.”
Boatwright grew up in Michigan, played golf at the University of North Carolina and has won club championships at the Country Club of Detroit, Glen View Club in Chicago and at Brooklawn. She is married to P.J. Boatwright III, the son of the late USGA Executive Director, P.J. Boatwright, Jr., who was considered the foremost authority on the Rules of Golf when he died in 1991. Their sons Graham and Jack are fine players. Jack won the Metropolitan Golf Association’s Junior Championship in 2018.
Though you might say Cathy married into golf royalty, her devotion to the game is hers alone. “It is such a wonderful game that has given me so much and taken me to so many wonderful places and allowed me to meet so many great people, I enjoy helping out and getting more people involved in the game,” said Boatwright.
The Ike Grainger Award is named after the former USGA President who was himself a leading authority on the rules.
