(June 10, 2021) – This week saw the return of the CIAC Golf Championships. The championships were played at six different sites from Monday-Wednesday. The CIAC season will conclude on Saturday with the State Open at the Black Hall Club.
At Tallwood Country Club it was Fairfield Prep capturing the Boys Division I team title with an 8-over finish. Fairfield Prep was led by an even-par 72 from William Huntington. Conard (+12) was second while Glastonbury (+13) took third.
The individual championship went to Amity’s Brett Chodos thanks to a 2-under 70. Chodos carded seven birdies on the day including three in a row on Nos. 14-16. Garrett Brown (Conard), Charles Schrohe (Greenwich), Huntington, and Connor Goode (Glastonbury) tied for second at even-par.
In the Girls Division I Championship played at Grassy Hill Country Club Hall High School claimed the title by 14 shots over second place New Canaan, Amity rounded out the top three in third place. Hall was paced by Anna DeSanto’s 12-over 82. DeSanto rolled in a birdie on the par-5 16th to highlight her round.
Farmington’s Catarina Petrovic shot the round of the day to earn medalist honors. Petrovic fired a 4-over 74 that included three birdies on the 8th, 9th, and 16th holes. Jensie-Rose Nicholas (Amity) finished second while DeSanto was third.
Led by medalist Matt Doyle Daniel Hand claimed the Boys Division II Championship at Timberlin Golf Club. Pomperaug finished in second place with Notre Dame-West Haven rounding out the top three.
In the individual race, Doyle ran away with the title firing a 5-under 67 to win by four shots over Alex Elia (Wilton) and Jonathon Bushka (Notre Dame-West Haven). Doyle recorded nine birdies during his round including four in the first eight holes and four in the last six holes.
In a tight race at Farmington Woods Golf Course Woodstock Academy edged out Berlin for the Girls Division II team title by a mere four-strokes. St. Paul Catholic was third. Woodstock Academy was led throughout the day by medalist Mia Dang’s 8-over 80. Dang recorded a birdie on the 5th hole to highlight her round. Libby Dunn (Berlin) and Aoife Devaney (Kennedy High School) finished second and third in the individual race.
In a nail biting finish St. Joseph captured the Boys Division III title by one shot over second place Lewis Mills and three shots over third place Tolland. Colin Firda led St. Joseph at Stanley Golf Course with a 6-over 77.
Danny Torres (Waterford) and Jack Wise (Cromwell) shared medalist honors with 3-over 74s. Torres carded one birdie, two bogeys, and a double-bogey during his round while Wise provided some more fireworks including an eagle on the par-5 9th hole that jump started his round.
Three players recorded 4-over 75s to share third place. The group included Sean Dowd (Granby Memorial), Max Baldwin (Tolland), and Bradley Sawka (Ellington).
At the Boys Division IV Championship contested at Fairview Farms Golf Course Portland took home the title by a comfortable margin over second place Immaculate. St. Paul Catholic finished third. Portland was led to the championship thanks in large part to the play of medalist Luke Stennett. The 15-year-old had an up and down round with four birdies and four bogeys.
Matthew Downes (St. Paul Catholic) and Daniel LeBlanc (Immaculate) nearly tracked down Stennett for medalist honors only to finish one shot back at 1-over 73 in a tie for second.
