Bull's Bridge Golf Club in South Kent celebrated it 10th anniversary in 2014, and although it's one of the CSGA's “youngest” member clubs, Bull's Bridge blends easily into one of Connecticut's most historic locations. As the annual site of the CSGA Tournament of Champions and host of the 2015 Connecticut Mid-Amateur Championship, its own golf history grows with every season.
The club takes its name from a nearby covered bridge that dates back to the Colonial era. While Jacob Bull built it to provide access to his grist and sawmill, the bridge reportedly offered passage to George Washington on four occasions during the Revolutionary War. Centuries later, the popular tourist attraction still remains active to car traffic spanning the Housatonic River just a few miles from the club.
Bull's Bridge features spectacular views throughout the Tom Fazio designed course. Surveying the magnificent landscape, his only design project in Connecticut, the world renowned Fazio remarked, “This is an outstanding piece of land for golf in a setting that is nothing short of spectacular. As a designer, it's what you hope and dream for in a project.”
The property's rugged elevation changes are effectively incorporated into the layout, sometimes subtly and other times dramatically. The sweeping fairways are often framed by distinctively sculptured white sand bunkers. New England style stonewalls weave throughout the course creating charm and challenge. Of all the course's unique characteristics, the greens are possibly the most outstanding feature, gaining notoriety as some of the finest in the state. The artfully constructed contours and the purest of putting surfaces create a challenging yet enjoyable putting experience.
In addition to hosting the Mid-Amateur on October 5th and 6th, Bull's Bridge will also host the CSGA Tournament of Champions on September 8th. The 2015 Connecticut Mid-Amateur will mark the first Mid-Amateur hosted at Bull's Bridge Country Club.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS: 54-hole stroke play championship. All players will play 18 holes on Monday, October 5th. The low 36 players including ties will advance to rounds two and three to be played on Tuesday, October 6th. The lowest 54 hole total will be declared the champion.
PAR AND YARDAGE: Bull's Bridge Golf Club will be set up at approximately 6,750 yards and will play to a par of 36-36–72.
HISTORY: The Connecticut Mid Amateur Championship was first held at Shennecossett Golf Course in 1988, where Daniel Hendrickson captured the championship on his home course. The Black Hall Club has hosted the most Mid-Amateur Championships with a total of seven (1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 and 2006). Bill Hermanson currently holds the record for most Mid-Amateur Championship titles with five. (1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 and 2001).
WHO CAN ENTER: The championship is open to any amateur golfer in Connecticut who will have reached their 25th birthday by October 5th, 2015, and who has a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 6.4
2014 CHAMPION: Kevin Foster of Hop Meadow Country Club shot rounds of 70-74-70–214 (-2) to capture the 27th Connecticut Mid-Amateur Championship on his home course, winning by two strokes over Philip Perry of Black Hall Club.
