The First Tee of Connecticut is proud to announce that Meghna Mazumdar, 13, of South Windsor, has been named the Grand Prize winner of the 2016 Wells Fargo Succeeding Together Contest, an essay contest that celebrates the tremendous impact The First Tee has on young people across the country.
Wells Fargo created the contest in 2013 specifically for the 30,000+ teenage participants of The First Tee, a youth development organization that introduces young people to the game of golf and its inherent values at approximately 170 chapters across the United States. The contest asked participants to write about the importance of developing and being part of a “Go-To-Team,” a Life Skill taught through The First Tee’s curriculum that fosters partnership and teamwork in all areas of life. Meghna refers to her “Go-To-Team” as her Board of Directors, with her Mom serving as Board Chairman and her Dad as CFO.
“Meghna is a determined young lady who has already accomplished much,” said Kent McClun, Wells Fargo Area President for Greater Connecticut. “She is wise beyond her years and will make Connecticut proud as she golfs alongside the best of the best. Wells Fargo recognizes the value of relationships and how we can achieve great things by working together — in the classroom, on the golf course, and in our communities.”
Meghna demonstrates that same Wells Fargo spirit of “working together to achieve great things” by counting on trusted members of her “Go-To-Team” – her parents, coaches, teachers and friends– when advice is needed.
As part of her Succeeding Together submission, Meghna shared that writing is her favorite subject, and that golf is her sport, but the Wells Fargo panel of judges was also impressed with her passion for investing. When Meghna was 11-years-old, her Mom enrolled her in a 10-week investment class in her hometown, which to Meghna’s surprise became something she looked forward to each Saturday. It sparked her interest so much that she wrote a letter to her investment idol Warren Buffett, who a few weeks later personally invited her to a shareholders’ meeting. Mr. Buffett has since been added to her iPhone under the category of “Elite-Go-To-Team”!
All contest winners receive a four-day/three-night trip for two to Charlotte, N.C., to attend the 2016 Wells Fargo Championship and experience the excitement of a PGA TOUR event from inside the ropes. As the grand prize winner, Meghna will be paired with a PGA TOUR player of her choice from the tournament’s field in the Pro-Am on Wednesday, May 4, 2016. When asked what her primary goal is for the Pro Am, Meghna said “to have fun,” which is one of the very first lessons she learned from Coach Ted (Pisk) when she started with The First Tee of Connecticut six years ago. Meghna’s parents gave credit to Coach Ted and Coach Marty (Sienko) for teaching both Meghna and her parents important Life Skills that they now use as a family.
In 2015, Wells Fargo deepened its relationship with The First Tee by becoming a National Trustee and further supporting the organization, its participants and volunteers – recognizing that little by little, Wells Fargo and The First Tee can work together to make a huge difference in the lives of so many kids. As a National Trustee of The First Tee, Wells Fargo is proud to support the mission and values of The First Tee nationally and through support of select chapters across the country.
